Describe the stasis in the play: where, when, who, what, etc. in a paragraph.
Disgraced takes place in Manhattan in 2011. The stasis of Disgraced takes place in Amir and Emily's apartment. It begins with Amir posing nude while Emily, who is a professional artist and Amir's wife, paints a portrait of him. Amir is a Pakistani paralegal who works extremely hard in the law firm. Emily is white artist who prefers to create Islamic art. Amir's nephew, Abe, walks into their apartment and he asks Amir to support Imam who has been accused of assisting terrorists. 2. What is the intrusion? The intrusion of the play occurs when Amir agrees to legally defend the Imam. Because Amir agrees to represent the accused, this causes tension at his work. Amir's coworkers believe that Amir is actually a Muslim, all because he took the case for the Imam. 3. What is the unique factor? The unique factor for Disgraced is that Amir comes to the realization that he isn't exactly who he thought he was. He thought he could just change who he was overnight but this was never the case. All Amir did was put up a social mask and hide who he was underneath his faux persona. 4. What is the dramatic question that should be answered by the end of the play? Will Amir ever come to terms with who he really is? Will Amir become a partner within the law firm? Will Amir and Emily continue to stay together? 5. Provide an illustration of the two kinds of exposition that the play has in it. The first kind of exposition is information known to most and occurs when Amir is withholding information from Emily. The second exposition is information known only to one and this occurs when Jory knows that Amir is having some serious trouble at work. 6. Identify the most theatrical moment in the play and of what importance it seems to be. The most theatrical moment is when Amir gets angry at the end of the dinner scene. He unleashes his angry by yelling at Jory and then at Emily for cheating on him. This boiling point for Amir is a real attention grabber as everything throughout the play has built up to this eruption of anger. 7. List some of the themes of the play. Religion Identity Prejudice Interracial couples 8. What does the chief character want and what are some obstacles that stand in the way of his getting what he wants? Amir wants to become a partner within the firm. He does all this hard work to cover up his past and who he truly was, but because he took this case the newspaper makes people think that he is not who he seems to be. This eventually ends with Amir not becoming a partner and Jory receiving the position he wanted within the firm. 9. Describe some possible images in the play and how does the title help us understand the play. A big image is Abe's clothing in the beginning and the end. In the beginning it is street clothes while the clothing at the end is more Islamic clothing. This change throughout the play represents Abe's change in confidence and Pride for his belief. The title of the play helps us understand Amir's feelings towards his past and how he is in the end of the play. This is because Amir feels like his background and beliefs have disgraced him and therefore he shuts out his past by putting up this fake persona. In the end it is Amir who has disgraced both himself and has been disgraced by his firm. Amir was not given the position that he strived so hard to earn and was fired from the firm. In the end it was Amir who was the real disgrace of the firm. 10. Briefly define the family relationships that are examined in the play. Within this play is a family dynamic that we haven't really seen so far throughout the semester. Looking at the relationship of Amir and Emily at the beginning seemed like a couple who got along decently, but over the course of the play the relationship takes a turn for the worse. Amir finds out that Emily had an affair and because of this Amir hits Emily. This anger and tension within this relationship shows that the bonds within this play are not that strong and lead to disappearing altogether in the end.
